LOWELL – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent Greg Hudon have confirmed that Bravindah Mawanda, 20, of Lowell, has been charged with fatally shooting Nikhl Israni, 24, of Lowell.
Last night, shortly before 8:00 p.m., Lowell Police responded to the area of Middlesex and Maude Streets in Lowell for the report of a person in the roadway. Upon arrival, police located the victim, Nikhl Israni, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to Lowell General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the defendant and the victim were in the victim’s car when the defendant allegedly shot the victim multiple times before fleeing back into his home near the shooting. Police were subsequently able to identify the defendant and locate a firearm, consistent with the victim’s wounds, inside the defendant’s home.
Bravindah Mawanda will be arraigned this morning in Lowell District Court.
This investigation is being conducted by Lowell Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office. The prosecutors assigned to the case are Christopher Tarrant and Jake McCrindle.
