The Operational Support Unit is one of the most multifaceted divisions in the police department.  The day to day responsibilities of the unit include:

  • Body Worn Camera Unit
  • Crossing Guards
  • Dive Team
  • Fleet Maintenance
  • Housing Officer
  • K-9 Officers
  • Motorcycle Unit
  • River Patrol
  • Sign and Meter Shop
  • Special Vehicles (UTV, Golf Cart, Segways)
  • Taser Management
  • Traffic Unit
    • Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP)
    • Accident Reconstruction 

In addition, Operational Support is responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and budgeting for every festival in the City of Lowell.  The Folk Festival, Bay State Marathon, Winter Festival, and Southeast Asian Water Festival are the largest annual events and bring tens of thousands of visitors and participants to the city each year.

Special Vehicles

Golf Cart

Lowell Police currently has 1 golf cart in use for crowd patrol during events.

UTV

There is currently 1 UTV in service. The UTV is used in during community outreach days and large community events.

Segway

LPD has 3 Segway’s which are used to patrol campuses and crowds.

Motorcycle Unit

There are currently 23 trained officers who are assigned to the motorcycle unit. There are 8 motorcycle units in service.

River Patrol

The police boat is a 20 foot rib craft model 5.85. The boat is used for water rescues, as well as training opportunities and other water related initiatives
